SitRep Viet Nam eBook John Newton
John Newton tethers you to his gritty Vietnam story just as the Marines tethered him to Vietnam for his tour of duty. He takes you with him into the jungle of the frightful and the unexpected that was the Viet Nam war. His story includes bits of platoon jargon you may have to research. This war stuff was all new to him as a young Lieutenant who suddenly realizes he’s responsible for the lives of his men. Lt. Sam, despite his training, has to quickly learn the way things are done and the tactics of jungle warfare in order to survive. He doesn't hold the reader's hand. The reader gets to know some of the Marines who tramped dangerous paths with him through billowing brush and the wide open rice paddies. Many passages; some stream of consciousness, some dream segments, bits of thoughts about the present and future are revealed in Lt. Sam’s mind. Don't expect a definition on every page or a glossary. It is what it is. The fog of war mists through the pages of SitRep: Viet Nam.Product details

SitRep Viet Nam eBook John Newton Reviews
What a powerful story. Engrossing - and beautifully written. The reader is drawn into the experiences and actions and fears of a Marine's life in the Vietnam War...you can feel it, hear it. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this account...not able to turn the pages fast enough. The vivid descriptions, the subtle sarcasm and humor, all make this a tremendous read.
Like reading a diary; learned A LOT about the men who served in VietNam. Highly recommend this if anyone you love served.
SitRepViet Nam
SitRep is a realistic account of the day to day lives of young marines in the hostile jungle environment of Viet Nam. This book is a sensory and vivid view of what these young men experienced in their daily lives during this fruitless war. The character that touched me the most was Doc P. He exemplified the idealism of a young man who quickly modifies his feelings when the reality and horrors of war quickly envelop him. He reminds me of all the young men who fought this war.
SitRep is comparable to What They Carried by Tim O'Brien in that it provided more insight into an awful time of supreme sacrifice for so many brave young Americans.
Like Pumpkin, I was pregnant and at home, praying that the brown car never stopped at my door.
War is Hell
A personal account of the experiences of a Marine and the members of his platoon in Viet Nam. A story of trust and survival written from eyes that saw and a heart that felt fear, pain, anger, and hope. This is a story of a young man thrust into conflict he was at one time the least likely ever to have to face. It is also the story of those he shared this experience with and their respective abilities to overcome the reality of time and place. It is a superbly written account of a quest for acceptance and bitter and unfathomably reality by a man who found and now shares with us the humanity of warriors.
I didn't care for this style of writing. The book did have its moments but to me they were few and far between. There was times you didn't know if he was dreaming or it was actually happening. Gave to little account of how the book ended like it did. I found it a hard read for the most part and wished I had quit reading it a 1/4th of the way through. Just not my style of reading.
Some of you may remember the great WW2 war movie "A Walk in The Sun". It told the story of a small group of American soldiers in Italy. It detailed the micro-ism of war as seen by each individual. When reading "Sitrep;Vietnam" I found myself drawn into each character in a very close and personal way. Much as one did in the WW2 novel. The thoughts of the men who, while engaged in mortal combat, still must spend hours and days of boredom, counting days to go, and just trying to stay alive. It is mostly the story of a young Marine Corp officer, Lt.Sam. He arrives to his platoon and the men doubt him, and wonder if he will have the right stuff. After all, he is on day one which means he is the FNG that will make decisions that can mean life and death to them. Lt.Sam can feel his newness and wonders greatly how he will perform. How he will feel when the wounded and dead are at his feet. He will make decisions that will mean life or death for others. The greatest test of combat. The ultimate responsibility!
It is a great story of a young warrior's coming of age. It is a long year when one counts every day and when it is over Lt. Sam will know far more about himself than he could have ever imagined. After reading this work you find your self thinking a great deal about the events and how they effected the men involved and---you as a reader.
